Atienza to revoke the permit of San Mateo landfill Residents of San Mateo, environmental activists, and businessmen went to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) to seek dialogue with DENR Sec. Lito Atienza regarding the new landfill project in municipality of San Mateo, Rizal province. The group headed by Kalikasan-People’s Network for the Environment and Coalition for Garbage-Free San Mateo follow up the earlier public commitment of DENR Sec. Lito Atienza that he will revoke the permit of San Mateo Sanitary Landfill Development Corp. (SMSLDC), operator of controversial the San Mateo Landfill Project, once proven that the project site was “misrepresented” or not located in Bgy. Pintung Bukawe. “DENR Sec. Atienza should by now prepare the revocation of the permit of SMLDC and start to investigate who are the corrupt officials in his office responsible about the project approval. We have submitted factual evidences and legal documents validating that the landfill project of SMLDC is not located in Bgy. Pintung Bukawe against what the proponent and DENR Environment and Management Bureau (EMB) are telling us,” says Clemente Bautista, National Coordinator of the environmental activist group Kalikasan-PNE. <-!break->
NO to BNPP Revival Press Release23 February 2009 Local folks and activists commemorate EDSA I by having a protest caravan against Bataan nuke plant In commemoration of EDSA I People Power Revolution, hundreds of militant activists in Manila held a protest caravan against the revival of Bataan Nuclear Power Plant (BNPP). Church people, environmentalists, scientists, health professionals, farmers, fisherfolks and women joined the caravan which was organized by the multi-sectoral alliance NO to BNPP Revival. "The fight to revive the BNPP has started to snowball and gain ground. Our caravan and the big mobilization of the Catholic Church and local people in Bataan show that the Filipino people still remain united and defiant against the scheme to re-open the mothballed BNPP," says Dr. Giovanni Tapang, spokesperson of the alliance and Chairperson of the progressive scientist group AGHAM.
